Many people think of flowering first when they hear the word "cannabis". But the path to flowering is a process that is much more than just "plant grows, plant flowers". Behind every high-quality flower is a sophisticated cultivation process, well thought out, controlled and full of passionate craftsmanship.
In this article, we take a look behind the scenes together: How is a premium flower really created? What role do technology, people and the environment play? And why is quality often decided in the very first days of cultivation?
Before the first flower is even in sight, everything starts with a decision: Which genetics should it be? Because quality starts with the base, the seed or cutting.
The basis: mother plants & variety selection
At Sainfort, the heart of our cultivation is our in-house collection of over 60 different varieties. Carefully selected, tested and further developed. Each plant starts its life from its own seed or as a cutting from a so-called mother plant. These mothers are lovingly nurtured to provide healthy offspring for months, again and again, always stable.
The choice of variety is made in close consultation with our partners. This is because medical THC cannabis has different requirements than CBD-rich varieties in terms of active ingredient profile, growth characteristics or aroma.
The first phase: pre-breeding with foresight
Once the cuttings have been cut, they enter the pre-breeding phase, which lasts around two weeks. During this time, the focus is on:
Root formation: No strong roots, no strong plant.
Light management: Gentle, even lighting ensures controlled growth.
Stabilization: Only robust cuttings make it to the next round, quality over quantity.
This phase often determines whether the plant has what it takes to produce a premium flower. At Sainfort, we therefore rely on maximum hygiene, controlled environmental conditions and a lot of experience, because every plant is individual.
After pre-breeding, the most exciting phase of cultivation begins: the transformation of tender little plants into strong flower suppliers. During this time, the focus is on targeted growth, plant care and a finely tuned microclimate.
Vegetative phase: structure, strength & preparation
In the so-called vegetative phase, the plants develop their root system further, grow in height and form the foundation for successful flowering. At Sainfort, this takes place in grow boxes between 100 m² and 700 m², equipped with state-of-the-art lighting technology, ventilation and precise irrigation.
What counts in this phase:
Even growth: Every plant should become stable, bushy and strong.
Pruning & training: We promote ideal flower distribution and light penetration through targeted pruning (pruning) and guiding the shoots.
Climate control: Temperature, humidity and light cycle are monitored precisely, as each variety has its own preferences.
Blooming phase: grafting begins
As soon as the plants are ready, the light pattern changes and the flowering phase is initiated. Now it's all about fine-tuning:
Nutrient balance: The supply of macro and micronutrients is essential to promote aroma, potency and resin formation.
Light quality: High-quality LED systems simulate the perfect sunlight, energy-efficient and plant-friendly.
Care & rest: Stress is the enemy of every flower. That is why we work particularly quietly, carefully and with great respect for the plant during this phase.
Then the first trichomes shine, terpenes exude their aromas and the flowers ripen, each of them unique and cultivated with the utmost precision.
Now comes the culmination of months of care and precision. This is where it is decided whether the full potential of the plant will actually end up in the flower.
At Sainfort, the harvest is carried out exclusively by hand, with a trained eye and a steady hand. The right time to harvest is crucial, because the plant is only ripe when the trichomes, color and smell are right.
- Care instead of speed: Each plant is inspected and harvested individually.
- Hanging upside down: The flowers are traditionally hung upside down so that they can dry evenly and the terpenes are preserved.
- Drying time: Around two weeks in a climate-controlled room, slowly and gently.
After drying is before maturing. Now the fermentation phase begins, in which the flowers develop their final quality:
Temperature & humidity: Precisely controlled so that chlorophyll is broken down and terpenes are preserved.
Aromatic fine-tuning: The typical cannabis scent is not created during growth, but right here.
Care & patience: This phase lasts several weeks, depending on the strain.
After ripening, the flowers are trimmed again by hand, i.e. excess foliage is removed. Then:
Weighing & packaging: Accurate to the gram, in childproof containers, with batch labeling.
Everything under GACP guidelines: From the scissors to the hygiene gown, everything follows strict standards.
Finally, each batch undergoes an external, independent laboratory analysis, which determines the following:
Ingredients: THC, CBD, CBG and co.
Purity: No pesticides, heavy metals or other residues.
Stability & Safety: Storage and packaging are also tested.
The result? A product that not only works, but creates trust through transparency, precision and genuine care with the standards of Swiss CertifiedCannabis.
